The Daily Whatever, Oct 31: Fucked-up Friday with Marlon Weems

When billionaires hoard, Congress starves, and CBS fires every Black person in the room — you know it’s Friday.

On today’s spooky Halloween edition of The Daily Whatever Show,

and I welcomed back our friend , the brilliant mind behind The Journeyman, for a Halloween-day edition of Fucked-up Friday. And wow, the world delivered plenty of material. As ever,

Things got serious fast as we dug into the rollback of SNAP benefits — a gut-punch that begins tomorrow. I pointed out the cruelty of Americans parroting “just get jobs” while nearly half of SNAP recipients are children, and most others are elderly, disabled, or already have jobs… but still qualify for benefits due to our low minimum wage. Marlon reminded us that Walmart, one of the nation’s largest private employers, has long relied on workers needing public assistance. “It’s a strategy,” he said. “They tell employees to apply for SNAP because they won’t pay them enough to live.”

And that is truly fucked-up.

From there, the conversation ricocheted from corporate greed to Christian hypocrisy to the ghosts of Frances Perkins and FDR. Lawrence gave a history lesson on the origins of the minimum wage, while I channeled righteous rage about billionaires who can’t seem to part with funds to ensure every American has access to food. “We socialize losses and privatize profits,” Marlon said — summing up America’s late-stage capitalism with trader-desk precision.

Then came the main event: everyone’s Fucked-up Friday stories.

The audience voted, and The Journeyman took the crown. Marlon’s story wasn’t just the most enraging. It was the clearest proof that systemic rot isn’t hiding in the shadows—it’s right there on the nightly news.
