I always knew this day would come.
As many of you know, I’m a west-coaster and a night owl. So a 7am daily podcast requires discipline as well as a loud alarm.
Guess which one I forgot to set this morning?
It was a delight to realize how much concern you all had for me—so many messages!—and a relief my amazing guests Walter Rhein and Frederic Poag were such good sports about it all. We still had a rowdy chat and such amazing conversation about all the fucked-up news of the week.
Specifically, our Fucked-up Friday picks were:
Walter went with the Democrats lacking an ounce of spine to stand up to Republicans, directed in particular to the 18 Senate Dems who helped pass the so-called GENIUS Act win for the cryptocurrency industry.
Frederic gave himself a “no Trump” policy to help limit the fucked-uppery of the week, and spoke about our society’s decline into incivility, as demonstrated by this woman on a flight ridiculing and spitting on her seatmate, who she’d decided was too fat.
Dana picked the story of Adriana Smith, the Georgia woman who’s been kept on life support since February to gestate her baby due to the state’s draconian so-called “pro-life” laws. The news claimed she “delivered” her baby this week. In reality, her baby boy Chance was extracted prematurely from her remains as they decomposed past a point where they could support his life.
Frederic tried to steal the vote Trump-style, but in the end, I emerged victorious.
But no one wins when women are forced to birth, and Adriana’s story is the worst but also inevitable reality now in the pro-forced-birth United States. It’s beyond fucked up.
