The Daily Whatever, July 8: Equal parts retort to an incel and GenX gay anthems...

With very special guest Brandon Ellrich

Today I intended to dedicate the hour to talking GenX gay anthems with

.

Then last night,

brought a story by MAGA incel Rohan Ghostwind to my attention. In it, he denigrates a cluster of women writers on Substack as “degenerates” and provides screenshot after screenshot to substantiate his claim that we made him say “what the fuck.”

I am featured as one of the degenerates.

Second in the list, no less.

And what was my offense, you may ask? Writing about my boobs and also my family. Can you imagine the audacity, of a woman who writes about being a sexual being and a parent??

What an outrage.

Here’s a screenshot of what he wrote, so you don’t need to send him traffic.

Why yes, Rohan, I *do* have range. And breadth. I contain multitudes.

I started today’s Live with a retort—and I delivered the most important part with my boobs out. so that knuckle-draggers like Mr Ghostwind will pay attention:

  • Women DGAF what you think about what we write.

  • Women can both be sexual beings and great moms.

  • Women and our boobs, and our pussies, are not the “what the fuck” stories you seem to think they are.

If posting clickbait anti-women headlines and screenshots of so-called salacious content by women gets you off, well, whatever.

But it’s uninteresting.

If you’re gonna come after women, at least find something actually offensive or titillating.

And also, maybe try to care about actual what the fucking fuckthings.

Anyhow. After my boobs and I responded, it was my delight to bring Brandon on the show to talk about his wonderful story for GenXy.

The Ultimate Gay GenX Song

The Ultimate Gay GenX Song

What I love about songs and poetry is the different interpretations a listener or reader can get from them. The writer may intend a particular meaning, usually inspired by a personal experience. Depending on the person listening, or the time of their life, it can take on something entirely different.

And spoiler alert: here was his pick:

But mostly, we discussed how we GenXers didn’t have actual queer songs. We had anthems that got adopted by Pride like “YMCA,” “It’s Raining Men,” and of course, “I’m Coming Out.”

I proposed a list of GenX-era songs to round out a gay playlist, ranging from the 70s through the 90s—ending with the first-ever overtly queer song to crack the Top 40, “I Kissed a Girl” by Jill Sobule (RIP) and my personal favorite band of all time, “When My Boy Walks Down the Street” by the Magnetic Fields.

The audience weighed in with picks as well (thanks, all!). I’ve compiled a quick list of songs we discussed below, mostly in order of release, starting with early 70s Hunky Dory-era Bowie.

Did we forget anything? If so, please share your picks in the comments!

Thank you
