The Daily Whatever, July 7: with Füsun Aydin and Stewart Mason

A wedding recap, a deep-dive into the music of 1984 and why it matters

Poor

! He made it home from Seattle safe and sound—but sadly, with a stomach flu*.

So today, I had to host it alone. But thankfully I had two amazing guests: first the incomparable

shared how her brother’s wedding went, when she reunited with the family she hadn’t seen in 15 years, since she came out as trans. (Spoiler alert: it went really well, other than being mostly ignored by her mother, who clearly doesn’t understand what a gift to the world her daughter Fusun is).

Then the delightful

joined, on approximately three minutes notice. Stewart is an extraordinary music writer, and author of “The Year in Top 40 Hits” on Three Imaginary Girls. Stewart is preternaturally knowledgeable about music, and effortlessly weaves memoir into each of his stories. We’ve really gotta get him writing on Substack more, so subscribe and perhaps he’ll start!

Thank you

, , , , , , , and many others for tuning in.

And be sure to join us tomorrow, when

will join us to talk about the ultimate GenX Songs. Here’s his story, if you wanna arrive prepared. As always, it’s at 10am ET/7am PT.

The Ultimate Gay GenX Song

What I love about songs and poetry is the different interpretations a listener or reader can get from them. The writer may intend a particular meaning, usually inspired by a personal experience. Depending on the person listening, or the time of their life, it can take on something entirely different.

Love you all, mean it!!

*Be sure to send him a nice note to help him feel better. Stomach flus are the very worst.
