The Daily Whatever, April 29: It’s the end of the ports as we know it

We don't feel fine about it, we need wine to gripe about it, and stuff is about to get scarce and more expensive. 😭😭

First of all, CONGRATS to Canada and the Liberals and Mark Carney! The liberals will form a minority government (meaning they don’t outright have 172 seats to form a majority government; they’ll need a junior party to team up with.) AND, Pierre Poilievre has lost his seat. The power of Trump—to kill everything he touches, again!

Brace yourselves, word on the street is that Carney has a bigger tariff retaliation plan, and was waiting until he had been elected to a full term to impose them. Here he is sounding tough on ‘Merica to the Beeb.

Ooooooh, Canada!!

As we noted, other smart folks here on Substack have been talking about the impending “stuff shortage” that will come about this week as a result of tariffs. The last container ships from China are arriving, and the port traffic to replace them is down massively.

And Dana noted that folks in Seattle are talking about the absence of container ships at the Port of Seattle—something that can be seen from nearly every vantage point from most of the city!

We talked about the obvious and immediate impacts in our article from this morning:

If you lived through the shortages of 2020 (and if you didn’t, you’re four, and you shouldn’t be reading this), you probably remember that creeping feeling: walking into a store and seeing rows of empty shelves. Unfortunately, we’re about to face something similar, b…

We talked about the things we can do now.

  • Plan ahead.

  • Buy more staples when they’re available and resist the urge to panic buy.

  • Think about investing in electronics purchases or car purchases now before the supply chain gets truly fucked again.

  • Stock up on your emergency supplies like we’re going to have a monthlong blackout.

  • Start a Victory Garden—tho we might rename them to “Fuck Trump Gardens”.

  • Follow good folks who are sharing wisdom, like Michelle Teheaux at Untrickled.

We can get through this together, but good lord this is a lesson we didn’t need to learn again after COVID, and yet, here we are!

Thank you
