genXy | The Podcast: Episode 6 - The GenX Career Meltdown with Jonathan Small

Scrappy GenXers on making your way in the work world today, which takes everything you got. Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot...

Figuring out job/work/career these days during the Great Career Meltdown feels a little like trying to find a clean bathroom at a music festival — chaotic, unpredictable, and occasionally miraculous. Gen X sits right in the middle of it all, caught between the Boomers' "stay at one job forever" mindset and the Millennials and Gen Z who basically invented side hustles as a lifestyle.

Listen as

and team up to dive headfirst into this wild landscape with our very first podcast guest— from the Substack Small Talk. We talked careers crumbling, bouncing back, re-inventing yourself again (again), and why Gen X still might be the most adaptable generation out there (even if we don’t always get the credit).

We also dive into the difference between a GenX Anthem, and what goes into considering a top-tier GenX song, and the conversation covers A LOT of ground. We might lose the thread a bit at the end, and fair warning, our podcast tool did not make our lives easier today. The ending is a bit abrupt (sorry), but the spirit is still there.

Talking with Jonathan confirmed what we already knew: the old career rules? Toast. But Gen X? We're still standing, still figuring it out, and still pretty damn resilient. If you’re out there wondering if anyone else is making it up as they go along—you are absolutely not alone. And you’re in the right place.
