Thank you
, , , , and so many others for tuning into The Daily Whatever: Fucked-Up Friday with and featuring our guest !Y’all! I (Lawrence) got a job! Huzzah! Also, I’m planning a new side hustle as Santa Claus. Read Santa Lawrence’s origin story here:
Wake Me Up Before You Ho-Ho
This past Saturday, my phone buzzed with a text alert at 9:28 am. Not too early, but I’d been up late the night before, dreaming up funny slogans to put on political tees, so I was technically still in bed, nursing my first coffee of the morning.
Today we had a battle royale for the most fucked-up thing that happened this past week. We agreed that deporting kids with cancer without their meds is by far the worst thing, but it was a strong race for what’s next:
Kevin led with his choice that the Trump budget draft cuts funding for the Narcan program that saves the lives of hundreds of thousands of folks in danger of dying from a drug overdose each year—and replaces it with nothing.
Lawrence followed up with the insanity that the Trump administration has deported back to El Salvador a legit MS-13 gang leader who was in US custody. The government was building a case against him to keep him behind bars, but in a shady twist, Trump sent him back to El Salvador—because this guy has info that would incriminate Bukele, the El Salvadoran President. Keep an eye out to see if he “falls out a window” or suffers a similar fate upon his return.
Dana clocked in with the ridiculous story that Donald Trump has put his own name forward as a contender to be the next Pope. Lindsay Graham, in an insane display of ass-kissery, suggested that the Conclave should consider this. (← This satire in the Palm Beach Post was too good not to link!) Later spin by numerous outlets to say that Trump was joking only fueled the feeling that 1984-style changing of source documents was increasing in the media.
Dana won by a large margin, and we then proceeded to talk about:
Glennon Doyle joining Substack—and then being chased off.
Kevin’s pick for the most GenX song of all time—his choice: Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds.
Finally, a tribute to Jill Sobule, gender-bending GenX (OK, Boomer) indie-pop star who died tragically yesterday at age 66.
We had a blast, and we can’t wait to talk with you, with
, and with each other AGAIN soon!Tune in tomorrow, Saturday, 03 May at 9am Pacific and Noon Eastern for more The Daily Whatever!
