Hi Dana, I lurved your Dublin essay and I don't even have kids! I'm new here and hoped to tune in to your Live on this topic but I guess I missed it. Is that the same thing as your podcast? (Just when I figured out Discord, now I gotta learn substack haha.) Too many tech platforms! Anywho, is there a replay somewhere? Not a huge rush. Just pass me a note in Geometry when it's up lol. Tangent: Remember paper notes? Do kids still do those? I still have mine from high school. Class of '86!
Aww thanks so much, Jackie! I got your note and am passing this one back because Geometry is sooooo boring. The replay of today's "Live" is right here, and tomorrow we'll share the weekly genXy recorded podcast:
Wow I wasn’t terrified before, but I really am now. I’ve been unemployed since February, I don’t have a brilliant tech background, I’m just a 54 year old Executive Assistant.
I don’t know if it’s good or bad thing that I just read how hard someone with a stellar education and a professional career can’t find work. I run of of UEI, then I’m homeless.
I was out of work for two years living in an emotionally and psychologically abusive relationship, but I didn’t have to worry about losing the roof over my head.
I work in the construction industry and got laid off one month to the day he sat down in the WH, all the jobs that were supposed to start were work for HPD, and Dept of Ed
My industry gets hit hard and fast. And I’m terrified
I can certainly relate to this I was let go from my previous job on November 7 , applied to over 400 postions, carefully crafting each resume for each position the results after 5 month were maybe 10 interviews and taking a job that pays far less than what I was used to. I think our generation is probably the forgotten generation as we are the smallest by numbers . But we are the most resilient as we are a hybrid of the Silent generation( we inherited their work ethic and the Millenials as we share their social conscience and ability to adapt to technology) Perhaps because of our qualities we are intimidating to the the hiring managers or maybe not. Maybe it's a 40 year trend of the Billionare class that has the politicians of BOTH parties under their thumbs : destroying unions, outsourcing jobs, giving in to AI to replace us : all for making more profits. The Boomers are now retured, they can get away with taking advantage of Gen Z and Millenials and thus GEN X is throiwn under the bus. Just my useless opinion.
Same, dude, same. Serious Q: How did you customize 400 RESUMES? I'm in the same boat and the resume tailoring is riddik. But when you have a lifetime of skills and you're applying for creative jobs, you gotta do it, right? I guess I'll have to let AI take a crack at it unless you have better tips. And I agree that we are probably intimidating to hiring managers who are now typically younger than us. Or they're just age-ist. And that mother-trucking NYT story didn't help!! Rant over. Tips appreciated!
Same here. Haven’t worked since my retail job laid me off in January due to lack of business post holidays. I’ve been applying to a lot of administrative, customer service and retail jobs. Only 1 interview in 4 months. I heard in my job coaching classes that posts on Indeed are just information gathering and don’t actually have openings. I think the best way is with the headhunters at agencies but they don’t pay enough for the cost of their insurance. I’m going to try and get my SS early and apply in 4 months. I’ll be 62 in January (boomer/gen x 1964.) The regime has cut alot of jobs, companies are cutting hiring back. It’s tough times. Any way we can think out of the box and be creative to make money in the meantime. I used to do pet sitting and dog walking but I recently sold my car as a preemptive to expensive maintenance and insurance costs. My barrier is taking public transit so trying to find something closer to where I live.
Hey Lawrence, I love the site name alpacalunch.com and your shirts are really funny! FACTS, as the kids say. I've just come from 3 days designing a Godfather movie shirt for my boyfriend on Zazzle and seeing all the terrible graphics and unfunny slogans on there. Nice job! I especially like the "I was told there would be cake" and "Enjoy Democracy" with the old Coke logo. I was thinking of doing the same thing -- selling T shirts!! Gen X-ers must have a hive mind, I swear. God, 2025 is exhausting. Keep going, Queen!
I can't wait to talk about this in our podcast tomorrow!

Both are with Jonathan Small from Small Talk and I know I'm biased, but I think we're all rather entertaining together. :)
Welcome to Substack! I'm pretty new here myself, so let's figure this thing out together.
Lawrence and I go Live on Substack every weekday morning at 10am ET/7am PT for "The Daily Whatever," so please join us if you can and say hello!
Thank you, Dana!! I’m excited to listen!

I like that “Eat The Rich” t-shirt.
