"The Folly of Realism" by Alexander Vindman has been my most useful insight to the psychology of Putin. Putin is viewed as entirely Russian today, but when the Berlin Wall fell he was in Dresden, East Germany working for the FSB. I know WW3 vs WW4 is pedantic, I think it does a much better job of explaining geopolitics in 2026. Saying Putin is trying to start WW4 so Russia can avenge the Cold War loss is an "elevator pitch" everyone with basic pop culture knowledge can understand.
Cold War = WW3 to Russian leadership. Putin being in East Germany in the 1980s means that Putin's kompromat on Trump includes 80s European nightclub CCTV footage and Soviet Bloc/Stasi secret police reports. Ivanka and Melania are both from the former Iron Curtain nations. What Putin has from the 1980s is worse than whatever is in the American Epstein files.
